. Responsabilities
1.1 Responsibility of the SNS
1.1.1. To ensure that the SNS complies with the policy
1.2 Responsibility Hospitals Management and Directors
1.2.1. To ensure that the division for which they are responsible complies with this policy
1.3 Responsibility of Departmental and Line Managers
1.3.1. To ensure that staff are aware of this policy
1.3.2. To ensure that only staff qualified as SFAs (FIRST SURGICAL ASSISTANT) undertake the role band new and existing staff receive appropriate information regarding training for the SFA
1.3.3. To ensure correct equipment and personal protective equipment is readily available and used appropriately.
1.4. Perioperative Staff
a) To be aware of this policy and practice within the guidelines
b) All SFAs to keep themselves updated on practice
c) All SFAs to participate in on going education and mentorship roles

The SFA replaces the Advanced Scrub Pratitioner
4. Aims of the Service Provision
4.1 Address the service need (regular requests from surgeons for non medical assistants due to the lack of availability of juniors doctors for theatre)
4.2 To demonstrate provision of quality care and competent service
4.3 To phase out the "dual rol" between scrub nurse that needs to be focus and not helping with instruments inside of the skin of the patient
5. Definition of SFA
The SFA works within a clinical governance framework primarily during the intraoperative phase of the patient, s care. Working as a part of the operating theatre team, the practitioner provides skilled informed assistance to the operating surgeon.
