  • Preparation and equipment

    • The nurse should have an understanding of the anatomy of the rectum before administering the enema.
    • All equipment should be available before administration, including:
      • The patient’s prescription.
      • The enema.
      • A gauze swab.
      • A jug containing hand-hot water (in which to warm the enema).
      • Tissues.
      • Non-latex gloves and an apron.
      • A protective bed cover (an incontinence sheet).
      • Lubricating gel.
    • The patient’s care plan should be available.
    • There should be a good source of light.
    • A commode or bedpan should be made available depending on the patient’s mobility.
    • The environment should be considered. Ensure privacy and dignity are maintained: screen the bed or close the door.
