Preparation and equipment
- The nurse should have an understanding of the anatomy of the rectum before administering the enema.
- All equipment should be available before administration, including:
- The patient’s prescription.
- The enema.
- A gauze swab.
- A jug containing hand-hot water (in which to warm the enema).
- Tissues.
- Non-latex gloves and an apron.
- A protective bed cover (an incontinence sheet).
- Lubricating gel.
- The patient’s care plan should be available.
- There should be a good source of light.
- A commode or bedpan should be made available depending on the patient’s mobility.
- The environment should be considered. Ensure privacy and dignity are maintained: screen the bed or close the door.
